Overview

Marion Island (English: Marion Island) is an uninhabited and inhospitable sub-Antarctic volcanic island in the southern Indian Ocean and belongs to South Africa since 1947, since 1994 to the province of the Western Cape and is an administrative part of the City of Cape Town. The island is the largest and southwestern of the two Prince Edward Islands and, unlike the northeastern Prince Edward Island, houses a glacier. The island was discovered on 13 January 1773 by the French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne and named after him.
